HC Deb 22 November 1976 vol 919 c826W
Mr. Gordon Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Energy how many new oil-related jobs in each Scottish region have been created since 1970; how many have been attributable to the efforts of the Offshore Supplies Office; and how many of the jobs created have a life-expectancy of over five years.

Dr. J. Dickson Mabon

Although there are about 50–55,000 offshore oil and gas related jobs in Scotland the only figures available by individual Scottish regions are for wholly related jobs—i.e. excluding indirectly or partially related jobs—totalling 25,800. For October 1976 the Relevant Department of Employment figures are:

Highlands 6,900
Islands 400
Grampian 11,100
Tayside 1,500
Fife, Central and Lothians 2,600
Strathclyde 3,300

Most of these jobs have arisen since 1970, but there has been a substantial growth since the Offshore Supplies Office was set up in January 1973. It is not possible to quantify precisely the effect of OSO. The number of jobs in future will alter from time to time according to the levels of activity in the various sectors of offshore oil related work.
