HC Deb 22 November 1976 vol 919 cc863-4W
Mr. David Hunt

asked the Secretary of State for Transport how many surveys, questionnaires, censuses or similar investigations have been carried out, either wholly or partly, at public expense, on behalf of or by his Department or by any public bodies for which he is responsible in 1974, 1975 and in 1976 to date, respectively, specifying their nature and purpose and the total cost to public funds.

Mr. William Rodgers

Full and detailed information is not available. It could be collected only with difficulty and at unreasonable cost. However, the main statistical surveys carried out on behalf of the Department, excluding regular routine inquiries, were as follows:

  • 1974–75.—Survey of Long Distance Travellers—Postal Questionnaires.
  • 1975–76.—National Travel Survey—Household Interview.
  • 1975–76.—Survey of Long Distance Travellers—Postal Questionnaire.
  • 1976.—Oxford Travel Survey—Household Interview.
  • 1976.—London Travel Survey—Household Interview.
  • 1976–77.—Survey of Long Distance Travellers—Postal Questionnaire.
  • 1976.—Regional Highway Traffic Project—Household and Roadside Interviews.

The direct costs of these surveys were £50,000, £200,000 and £1.95 million for 1974, 1975 and 1976 respectively.

In addition, there were a number of small ad hoc surveys, mainly carried out by research staff, on travel behaviour, pedestrian habits and road safety.
