HC Deb 22 November 1976 vol 919 c924W
Mr. Budgen

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he plans to make proposals to Parliament to change the law so that Commonwealth citizens visiting this country may be required to register with the police to prevent their overstaying.

Dr. Summerskill

No.

Mr. Budgen

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what conditions may be imposed lawfully upon visitors to the United Kingdom from the Commonwealth in order to facilitate after-entry control and to act as a deterrent to overstaying.

Dr. Summerskill

Non-patrial Commonwealth citizens who qualify for admission as visitors are admitted for a limited period, normally six months or less. There is also power to restrict or prohibit such a person taking employment or setting up in business during his permitted stay.
