Mr. Cyril Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what imports of textile goods from the United Kingdom are being allowed by India at the present time: arid what duty India places on such imports.

Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Trade (1) whether United Kingdom textiles exported to India are subject to import licensing and if he will make a statement;

(2) whether United Kingdom textiles exported to India are subject to customs and excise duties or any auxiliary duties

Mr. Meacher,

pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 17th November 1976, Vol. 919, c. 636–7], gave the following information:

I reply also to the two Questions by the hon. Member for Macclesfield (Mr. Winterton).

The current Indian import policy permits the issue of licences for the import of the following textile goods from any country including the United Kingdom: Melton cloth for the manufacture of ten- discussed the matter last week with representatives of the industry. As a result of that meeting, the association has undertaken to provide further necessary information.
