Mr. George Grant

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make a statement on the present high level of unemployment in the Northern Region.

Mr. Golding

The present high level of unemployment in the Northern Region is largely due to the current downturn in world trade and recovery in the region as in the rest of the United Kingdom is dependent upon the recovery of the economy generally.

The Northern Region has also suffered from the rundown of some of its traditional industries. This is one of the reasons why the whole region has assisted
