HC Deb 09 November 1976 vol 919 c108W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people were employed in manufacturing industry in the United Kingdom and in Wales, respectively, in 1965 and in 1975.

Mr. Golding

At June 1965, there were 8,561,000 employees in employment in manufacturing industries in the United Kingdom and 311,000 in Wales. At June 1975 the figures were 7,488,000 and 317,000, respectively. These figures are taken from the continuous series of employment estimates which allows for the discontinuities in former series. The figures for Wales do not include employees in the Welsh sector of the Chester Employment Office area, currently estimated to be about 5,000.
