Mr. Hugh Jenkins

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what percentage of the 100,000 animals used at the Porton Establishments in 1975 were used at the chemical defence establishment and what percentage at the microbiological research establishment.

Dr. Gilbert

Of the 110,365 animals used at the Porton Establishments in 1975, 20 per cent. were used at the Chemical Defence Establishment and 80 per cent. at the Microbiological Research Establishment.

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will categorise the 100,000 animals used in experiments at Porton in 1975.

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many persons are engaged in using animals for research purposes at Porton Establishments.

Dr. Gilbert

116 members of the staff of the Porton Establishments are licensed by my right hon. Friend the Home Secretary to perform experiments on living animals.

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he is satisfied that the deaths of animals at the Porton Establishments is in every case quick and painless; or whether there are cases of animals being subjected to prolonged pain before being killed.
