HC Deb 04 November 1976 vol 918 c696W
Rev. Ian Paisley

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (1) why the members of the RUC have not benefited in any way by the £6 per week of the Government's wages policy;

(2) now that the Police Federation for Northern Ireland has ceased to recognise the Police Council, what steps he proposes to take to discuss the case for an increase in the pay of members of the RUC and RUCR;

(3) why the pay rise granted to members of the RUC in September 1975 was not backdated to September 1974.

Mr. Dunn

Negotiations on the pay of members of the Royal Ulster Constabulary, like that of members of police forces in Great Britain, is a matter for the Police Council for the United Kingdom. There cannot be separate negotiations with the Police Federation for Northern Ireland. The pay of the RUC Reserve, which is not a matter for the Police Council, is normally reviewed following an increase in the pay of the regular force.

Rev. Ian Paisley

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement on the increase in rent allowance to members of the RUC.

Mr. Dunn

Revised maximum limits of rent allowance for the RUC, calculated in accordance with an agreement of the Police Council, have recently been approved with effect from 1st April 1976.
