HC Deb 04 November 1976 vol 918 cc686-7W
Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will compare the net overseas earnings per head of employees in the City with net overseas earnings per head of employees in the car industry in the United Kingdom in the latest year for which the figures are available.

Mr. Joel Barnett

I regret that the comparison cannot be made. The net overseas earnings of the City in 1975 were £978 million, but the number of employees in the many enterprises involved is not known. Information on the net value of exports—that is, excluding the import content—is not readily available for the motor vehicle manufacturing industry (Minimum List Heading 381 of the Standard Industrial Classification). The total value of exports of cars in 1975 was £480 million and the total value of all exports by the motor vehicle manufacturing industry (MLH381) was £1,760 million. The average level of employment in the motor vehicle manufacturing industry in 1975 was about 460,000.
