HC Deb 04 November 1976 vol 918 cc694-5W
Mr. Shersby

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what percentage of the gross national product was spent on defence for each of the last five years for which figures are available; and what are the comparable figures for the other member countries of the EEC.

Mr. Mulley

The estimated percentages of GNP spent on defence by the EEC countries for the years 1971 to 1975 are given below:

in psychological operations currently being provided at the Joint Warfare Establishment at Old Sarum, Wiltshire.

Mr. Robert C. Brown

The Joint Warfare Establishment, Old Sarum, conducts courses of 10 and four days' duration on this subject. The syllabus consists of the study and analysis of propaganda techniques and their countermeasures; elementary psychology and community relations.

It may help my hon. Friend to know that in the last three financial years these courses have been attended by just over 10 per cent. of the total of 2,120 personnel trained at JWE to whom I referred in my answer of 27th October 1976–[Vol. 918, c. 262–3]—22 were civilians. The remaining 90 per cent. have attended courses on subjects relating to joint service operations to which I referred in the same answer.

Mr. Litterick

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many members of his Department's civilian staff have attended courses in psychological operations at the Joint Warfare Establishment at Old Sarum, Wiltshire, during each of the last three years for which this information is available.

Mr. Robert C. Brown

As follows: 1973–74, Nil; 1974–75, one; 1975–76, two.
