§ Mr. George Gardinerasked the Secretary of State for Transport (1) what value is attached to the answers to the question in the International Drivers' Behaviour Research Association Survey on whether the recipients of questionnaires observe speed limits always, usually, occasionally or never;
649W(2) what is the cost to public funds of preparing and undertaking the International Drivers' Behaviour Research Association Survey; and to how many persons questionnaires have been sent.
§ Mr. HoramThis survey involves the United Kingdom and 12 other countries. The United Kingdom contribution to its cost is £1,500, which reflects the cost of issuing and processing 1,500 questionnaires in this country. Knowledge of public attitudes to any kind of official regulation is a material factor in policy formation. The survey will provide for the first time systematic information on similarities and differences in attitudes of drivers in countries with varying legal systems, road networks, and road accident figures.
