§ Mr. Loydenasked the Secretary of State for the Environment if, in view of a recent decision by the United States Academy of Science to ban the use of cetrain aerosols containing flurocarbons, the United Kingdom intends to introduce a similar ban; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Denis HowellA recent report by the United States National Academy610W of Science concludes that further research is needed before it can be decided whether the use of fluorocarbon aerosol propellants should be regulated. This accords closely with our own position as set out in a report published in April this year by my Department's Central Unit on Environmental Pollution. I understand that in view of the length of time needed to develop such a regulatory system there the United States Government have set in hand work preparatory to such regulations. At this stage I do not consider that regulatory action is needed here.
