asked the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) if he will list the percentage pass and failure rates among pupils presented for examination at O and H grade respectively (a) in the period September 1962 to September 1972 and (b) from September 1972 until the latest date for which figures are available; and if he will detail the H grade information in terms of the percentage of A, B and C levels awarded;

(2) what were the numbers of pupils presented for examination at O and H grade, respectively (a) in the period September 1962 to September 1976 and (b) from September 1972 until the latest date for which figures are available.

I have asked the Director of the Scottish Certificate of Education Examination Board to provide the hon. Member with this information which is not readily available in the form requested. Information about candidates, subject presentations, and awards in the Scottish Certificate of Education examinations is given in the annual reports of the Scottish Education Department 1962–64 and the annual reports of the Scottish Certificate of Education Examination Board 1965–75.
