HC Deb 28 May 1976 vol 912 c496W
Mr. David Mitchell

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what level of post tax income in cash would be received per week by a man, wife and three children under 5 years of age, receiving social security benefit but excluding any contributions towards rent; what benefits other than cash such a family would receive; and what is the estimated value of these on a weekly basis.

Mr. Orme

The hon. Member presumably refers to supplementary benefit, in which case the answer is £27.05, excluding provision for rent, if the ordinary scale rate applied, and £30.85 if the long-term scale rate applied. The family would receive free welfare milk and vitamins for the first two children—worth £1.21 a week—in addition to those—worth 60½p—which are generally available for the third child. They would also be entitled to free prescriptions, dental treatment, dentures and certain glasses if the situation arose.
