§ Mr. David Mitchellasked the Secretary of State for Social Services what level of post tax income in cash would be received per week by a man, wife and three children under 5 years of age, receiving social security benefit but excluding any contributions towards rent; what benefits other than cash such a family would receive; and what is the estimated value of these on a weekly basis.
§ Mr. OrmeThe hon. Member presumably refers to supplementary benefit, in which case the answer is £27.05, excluding provision for rent, if the ordinary scale rate applied, and £30.85 if the long-term scale rate applied. The family would receive free welfare milk and vitamins for the first two children—worth £1.21 a week—in addition to those—worth 60½p—which are generally available for the third child. They would also be entitled to free prescriptions, dental treatment, dentures and certain glasses if the situation arose.
