HC Deb 28 May 1976 vol 912 c454W
Mr. Raphael Tuck

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether, in view of the pollution due to scrap and broken glass throughout the country, he will seek to have glass bottles standardised in metric sizes so that they can be reused by any plant.

Mr. Guy Barnett

Standardisation of containers by volume is in progress as a consumer protection measure, but this will not of itself reduce litter, which contains both returnable and non-returnable bottles. Proper collection systems are a more effective way of securing reuse.
