§ Mr. John H. Osbornasked the Secretary of State for Employment, of the 22,790,000 males and females in full and part-time employment, what number and percentage, from statistics available to him, are members of recognised trade unions.
§ Mr. Harold WalkerThe latest available information about the total membership of trade unions was published in the November 1975 issue of theDepartment of Employment Gazette. This showed that at the end of 1974 there were 11,673,000 persons in the United Kingdom who were members of trade unions. The statistics of union membership do not separately distinguish those members who are currently unemployed from those who are not. It is estimated that at the end of 1974 the proportion of all employees whether in employment or unemployed, who were members of trade unions was about 50 per cent.
