§ Mr. LuardAbout half the Goans of Malawi are British protected persons by birth in the former Nyasaland Protectorate. Others acquired citizenship of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland by naturalisation; at the dissolution of the federation these became citizens of the United Kingdom and Colonies.
When Malawi achieved independence in 1964 people who did not become citizens of Malawi were allowed to remain citizens of the United Kingdom and Colonies or British protected persons as a result of the operation of the Malawi Independence Act (1964).
