HC Deb 21 May 1976 vol 911 c758W
Mr. Spearing

asked the Minister for the Civil Service what, for the latest convenient year, was the expenditure by his Department in respect of (a) travel by warrant and (b) repayment for travel and subsistence allowances, with comparable figures 10 years previously.

Mr. Charles R. Morris

The expenditure by the Civil Service Department in 1975–76 in respect of (a) travel by warrant was £168,560 and (b) repayment for travel and subsistence allowances was £901,245. These figures include the payment of expenses to candidates in recruitment competitions run by the Civil Service Commission.

The Civil Service Department was established on 1st November 1968, and expenditure from 1969–70, the first full year of the Department, onwards is as follows:

£
1969–70 259,451
1970–71 304,239
1971–72 354,286
1972–73 442,957
1973–74 458,955
1974–75 693,382

Separate figures for travel by warrant and repayment for travel and subsistence are not readily available for these years, which are not directly comparable to 1975–76 due to changes in the structure of the Department.
