HC Deb 21 May 1976 vol 911 cc756-7W
Mr. Michael McNair-Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many variations in the national insurance death grant have been made since 1948; and how many men and women are ineligible for it on their death because they were born before either 5th July 1883 or 5th July 1888.

Mr. Deakins

Death grant has been increased twice since it first became payable in 1949.

It is estimated there are about 10,000 men and 189,000 women for whom no death grant will be payable because they were over the minimum pension age on 5th July 1948.

Mr. Michael McNair-Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the annual expenditure on national insurance death grants for men born on or after 5th July 1883 but before 5th July 1893 and women born on or after 5th July 1888 but before 5th July 1898.

Mr. Deakins

The estimated expenditure for 1976–77 is £2¼ million.
