Mr. Gordon Wilson

asked the Minister for the Civil Service how much Central Government spent in 1973–74, 1974–75 and 1975–76 on computer equipment including peripherals; what part of this expenditure was equipment which constituted or formed part of computer systems larger than Atlas; and what part of the latter figure relates to acquisitions from ICL, NCR, Honeywell, Burroughs, IBM and Univac, respectively.

Expenditure on procurement of computer equipment for central Government in the past three years has been as follows:

The figures cover acquisition of all types of computer equipment including terminals and data preparation equipment.

A breakdown of these figures in the manner requested by the hon. Member could not be provided without disproportionate expense.

Information about the values of im-imported parts, components and peripherals is available only in terms of orders placed. For 1973–74 and 1974–75 these values, based upon declarations by the suppliers, were £6 million and £5.9 million respectively. An analysis of this information by company could not be provided without disproportionate expense.

The analysis of expenditure and orders in 1975–76 is not yet available.
