§ Mr. McElhoneAs the recent consultation document on transport policy made clear, the Government recognise the need for basic public transport services in rural areas, and for continuing financial support. The assessment of the need, the means of meeting it, and the provision of financial support are primarily matters for the regional and islands councils. It is hoped that the forthcoming rural transport demonstration projects, one of which will be in Scotland, will provide a valuable source of information and new ideas.
