§ 12. Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will make a further statement on the investigations which are taking place concerning alleged irregularities in the Bank of England relating to currency activities contrary to the Exchange Control Acts; and whether the statement issued by his Department that, if irregularities are found to have occurred where the participants knew what they were doing, prosecutions may follow, was issued with his approval.
§ Mr. Robert SheldonI cannot say more than that the investigation is proceeding urgently. I confirm that the statement by the Bank of England on 28th April was made with my approval.
§ 24. Mr. Wrigglesworthasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will publish the findings of the investigation into breaches of the exchange control laws by Bank of England officials.
§ Mr. Robert SheldonAn announcement will be made in due course about the outcome of the investigation. If it should produce evidence of exchange control offences, further action will be a matter for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
