HC Deb 12 May 1976 vol 911 cc195-6W
Mr. Loyden

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what progress has been made to establish the principle of industrial democracy in current legislation.

Mr. Harold Walker

Since 1st March 1974 the Government have brought forward and Parlament has enacted a number of measures designed to establish the principle of industrial democracy.

The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, provides for the appointment by recognised trade unions of safety representatives from amongst employees and requires employers to consult any such representatives with a view to developing and checking health and safety measures and, at the request of the representatives, to establish safety committees to keep such measures under review.

The Employment Protection Act 1975 requires employers to disclose a wide range of information to the representatives of recognised independent trade unions for the purposes of collective bargaining; it also obliges an employer to include provision for the protection of staff interests. Meanwhile, the development corporation will not proceed further with the development of Stonehouse.
