HC Deb 31 March 1976 vol 908 cc509-10W
12. Mr. Newton

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a further statement on his efforts to obtain the release of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Whitecross from detention in Argentina.

Mr. Rowlands

On 26th March when our chargé d'affaires called on Admiral Vanek, who was then in charge of the Foreign Ministry, to signify Her Majesty's Government's recognition of the new Argentine Government, he took the opportunity to reinforce our previous representations for a speedy resolution of this case.

We have just learned that since then a local court has granted writs of habeus corpus for Mr. and Mrs. Whitecross. However, the Executive appealed against this yesterday and the case will have to be considered by the Supreme Court as soon as it resumes its functions. No date has been set for this.

I am urgently considering what further steps we can take.
