asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) what is the total amount of borrowed foreign currency invested in British firms in the eight other member countries of the EEC for the years 1973, 1974 and 1975, respectively;

(2) what was the total amount of borrowing, for which permission was required, by British firms to invest in the other countries of the EEC for the years 1973, 1974 and 1975, respectively.

The net amount of foreign currency borrowed by United Kingdom resident companies, with permission under the Exchange Control Act 1947, from United Kingdom banks and from overseas sources to finance direct investment in EEC subsidiaries, branches and associates was £319 million in 1973 and an estimated £262 million and £108 million in 1974 and 1975, respectively.
