HC Deb 23 March 1976 vol 908 cc108-9W
Mr. Macfarlane

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what are the functions and the terms of reference of the Schools Council; who appoints the members; if he will list the members of the Council; and what discussions he has had regarding the standards in CSE and GCE examinations.

Mr. Mulley

The functions of the Schools Council and information about the appointment of members are set out in the Council's constitution. I am sending the hon. Member a copy, together with a list of members of the Council.

The Council, amongst other things, acts on my behalf as the central co-ordinating authority for the GCE and CSE examinations and keeps the monitoring and maintenance of standards under review. My Department is kept informed of the results of this work.
