§ Mr. Giles Shawasked the Minister for Overseas Development if he will list the courses for which Rhodesian African students are admitted into the United Kingdom to study at British universities; and on what basis these courses are selected.
§ Mr. PrenticeRhodesian Africans who qualify as students for entry to the United Kingdom may pursue a very wide range of the courses available at British universities. But the principal criterion governing awards under my Ministry's programmes is that the course should have a clear developmental purpose. In the context of the many and varied future manpower requirements of Rhodesia, this would exclude only very few disciplines—e.g., theology, music, and the visual arts.
