HC Deb 09 March 1976 vol 907 cc160-1W
Bain

Mrs. asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) what was the cost of implementing the Houghton Report recommendations in England and Wales, expressed, if possible, in terms of teacher hours;

(2) what was the total cost of implementing the Houghton Report recommendations in England and Wales as it affected colleges of further education.

Mr. Gerry Fowler

In the financial year 1975–76, the first full year for which the increases recommended by the Houghton Committee are payable, the sums allowed for in the Rate Support Grant Increase Order and the Department's Votes to cover the increased institutional costs of the award in England and Wales was £446 million. £79 million of this are attributable to institutions of further education. It is not possible to express these costs in terms of teacher hours.
