HC Deb 09 March 1976 vol 907 cc184-5W
35. Mr. Cormack

asked the Secretary of State for Employment whether he will have urgent discussions with the National Union of Journalists in order to discuss the implication for Press freedom, and the effective implementation of his Press charter, of the recent action of the Barnsley branch of that union.

Mr. Foot

I have already expressed my view that the action of the Barnsley branch of the NUJ might have more serious implications than the Barnsley branch and the NUJ Executive have so far appreciated, and I trust they will consider the matter afresh. The best service all concerned about the Press Charter can do is to start the discussions about it as soon as possible, and the next most necessary step is that Parliament should put the Act which incorporates the Charter on the statute book.
