asked the Secretary of State for Defence what consultations he has had with NATO about the effect of further defence cuts, as announced in the latest White Paper on Public Expenditure.

30. Mr. Wall

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what is the effect of the additional defence cuts of £177 million announced for the current year on both hardware programmes and on personnel.

Mr. William Rodgers

The reduction of £177 million in the defence budget relates to the year 1977–78. Details of its effect on hardware programmes and personnel were given by the Secretary of State for Defence on 20th February—[Vol. 905, c.831–34]—and will also be set out in the forthcoming defence White Paper.

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what consultations he now proposes to institute in the light of the Report of the Sub-Committee of the Select Committee on Expenditure relating to defence.
