asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he is yet in a position to estimate the number of crimes made known to the police in Scot-and in 1975; and if he will make a statement.

Yes. The following Table gives the provisional figures for recorded crimes made known to the police in 1975 and corresponding figures for 1974—

between 1974 and 1975. Further examination of the returns is being made by my Department and will be reported in the 1975 volume of criminal statistics to be published later this year. But a provisional calculation leads to the conclusion that the figures given above do not represent the real rise in crimes made known to the police, which is estimated to be of the order of 10 per cent.
