HC Deb 04 March 1976 vol 906 c715W
31. Mr. Luce

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what representations he has had regarding the tax treatment of widows.

35. Mr. Ovenden

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what representations he has received concerning widows' tax allowances; and what replies he has sent.

Mr. Denzil Davies

I would refer the hon. Member and my hon. Friend to the answer I gave today to my hon. Friend the Member for Sowerby (Mr. Madden).

33. Mr. Bates

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what would be the cost of giving widows and widowers the married person's tax allowance.

Mr. Denzil Davies

For widows only the estimated cost for 1975–76 is about £75 million. This includes the cost giving widows over 65 the married rather than the single rate of age allowance. I regret that information is not available on which to base an estimate for widowers.
