HC Deb 04 March 1976 vol 906 c713W
24. Mr. Mike Thomas

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer by how much the real incomes post tax of the worker on the average wage, the pensioner couple and the single pensioner have risen, respectively, since 1st March 1974; and if he will take account of these figures in his taxation policy.

Mr. Denzil Davies

At the end of December 1975 the real post-tax income of a married couple, with two children, and with the husband on average full time earnings, was ½ per cent. higher than at the beginning of March 1974. By comparison the real income of the single pensioner was 19.1 per cent. higher over the same period, and 17.7 per cent., for the married pensioner couple. Figures on real incomes are, of course, taken fully into account in the formation of taxation policy.
