Mr. Skeet

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment of the total i approximately 24 million acres of land developed in the United Kingdom, what is the total acreage that has been utilised (a) for trunk roads and (b) by British Rail; and if he will identify separately the area covered by the national rail network.

Dr. Gilbert

There are 9,964 miles of trunk road, which are estimated to occupy about 100,000 acres of land.

British Railways route mileage is 11,258; the total British Rail land holding amounts to 210,000 acres, but the area within this which is covered by the rail network cannot readily be calculated.
