Mr. Hicks

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the increase in the cost of living between the latest date for which figures are available and 1965, assuming a base of 100 in that year.

Mr. Denzil Davies

The cost of living taking a base of 100 in 1965 and measured by the General Index of Retail Prices, stood at 253 in January 1976, the latest date available. This is an increase of 153 per cent.
