§ Mr. William Hamiltonasked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many public appointments are within his gift; what are the emoluments payable; what was the total cost in the last financial year; and what were the comparable figures in 1970.
§ Mr. CroslandI am responsible for roughly 2,300 appointments i all. Of these, 1,071 are paid and this figure incldes 605 members of rent assessment panels who are paid on a daily fee basis. Emoluments in respect of paid appointments other than to RAPs amount to some £850,000 and the total cost of salaries and fees in the last financial year 613W estimated to be of the order of £1,450,000. Exact figures are not readily available and could be compiled only at disproportionate cost to public funds. It is not possible to give comparable figures for 1970 as my Department was not formed until November of that year.
