HC Deb 02 March 1976 vol 906 cc551-3W
Mr. Fairbairn

asked the Secretary of state for the Environment what is the equivalent expenditure per head of the population on roads in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Holland, Luxembourg and Scotland, in the last year for which figures are available; and what is the comparative percentage of the gross national product of such expenditure.

Dr. Gilbert

Following are the estimated figures for Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Federal Republic of Germany, and Scotland. These international estimates are based on figures obtained from various UN publications whilst the Scottish estimates are based on United Kingdom sources. Comparable information is not readily available internationally for France, Italy, Netherlands and Luxembourg:

EXPENDITURE ON ROADS IN CERTAIN COUNTRIES 1972
Road expenditure
Per head of population£ As a proportion of GDP Per cent.
Norway 56 3.3
Sweden 35 1.6
Denmark 30 1.7
Federal Republic of Germany 36 20
Scotland 18 1.6

Mr. David Price

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what will be the impact of the 23 per cent. reduction in expenditure in roads and road transport between 1975–76 and 1978–79 forecast in Command Paper No. 6393 of February 1976 on new road construction, road improvement and road maintenance, respectively, in the non-metropolitan county of Hampshire over the same period.

Dr. Gilbert

It is not practicable to say what the impact will be in an individual county since this must largely depend on the modified transport policies and programmes which the county council will need to prepare in the light of the reduction. The effects expected nationally are described in the White Paper.

Mr. Skeet

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) what is the expenditure per capita on roads in the United Kingdom compared with other EEC countries;

(2) how many miles of road per capita there are in the United Kingdom; and how this figure compares with Great Britain's major European competitors.

Dr. Gilbert

Following are the estimated figures for Denmark, Federal Republic of Germany and the United Kingdom. Comparable information is not readily available for France, Italy, the Netherlands or Luxemburg. These international estimates are based on figures obtained from various United Nations publications, and relate to 1972 which is the last year for which comparative figures are available.

Kilometers per capita Expenditure per capita (£)
Denmark 0.013 30
Federal Republic of Germany 0.007 36
United Kingdom 0.006 17
