HC Deb 02 March 1976 vol 906 c498W
Mr. Pavitt

asked the Secretary of State for Energy whether he will give a general direction to the CEGB to ensure that power stations are so designed that noise levels emitted by them do not exceed 50 decibels at 100 yards.

Mr. Benn

The Control of Pollution Act 1974 places a duty on the CEGB to employ the best practicable means for minimising noise from its installations, and provides local authorities with power to deal with noise nuisance if it arises. In designing new power stations the Board incorporates various noise absorbing devices and improved building methods to ensure that noise is limited to acceptable levels. I therefore do not consider it necessary for me to give the Board general directions in the matter.
