HC Deb 02 March 1976 vol 906 c578W
Mr. Madden

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many successful prosecutions have been taken under the Asbestos Regulations 1969; and what is the total amount of fines paid.

Mr. Harold Walker

I am informed by the Chairman of the Health and Safety Commission that the number of successful prosecutions taken under the Asbestos Industry Regulations 1969 since they came into operation in May 1970 until December 1975 was 120. The total amount of fines paid was £7,800.

Mr. Madden

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many prohibition and improvement notices have been issued by factory inspectors for factories where asbestos is used.

Mr. Harold Walker

I am informed by the Chairman of the Health and Safety Commission that at the present time there is no breakdown of the total numbers of prohibition and improvement notices which will give those relating to factories where asbestos is used. Information is now being collected from all outstationed offices of Her Majesty's Factory Inspectorate which should give the number of notices issued where the main subject matter concerned is asbestos. I shall give a further reply to my hon. Friend when the figures are ready.
