HC Deb 01 March 1976 vol 906 c475W
Mr. Luce

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what action is being taken to ensure that the elderly and those on lower incomes obtain advice about nutrition and diets.

Dr. Owen

As a consequence of reorganisation of the National Health Service, the advice of qualified dietitians is gradually becoming available through a district dietetic service. Individuals can obtain advice about nutrition and diets from their general practitioners many of whom now have direct access to the district dietetic service.

The Chief Medical Officer's Committee on Medical Aspects of Food Policy is responsible for the nutritional surveillance of the population including the elderly and those on lower incomes. To date it has fouund no cause for concern about the nutritional status of these groups.
