§ Mr. Peter Millsasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is his policy towards the recent roadways strategy document, whereby many rural roads would be downgraded to the detriment of the rural population if these roads ceased to be maintained.
§ Dr. GilbertThese roads are the responsibility of the local highway authorities and the report, which is available in the library, has been made to the Association of County Councils. I have however, previously stated that, where economies are made, I expect their impact to be greatest on the less heavily trafficked roads although operations affecting road safety should be substantially unchanged.
