asked the Secretary of State for Industry what has been the amount of money spent on research and development in the computer industry over each of the past six years; and what was the amount contributed by the Government during each year.

The latest estimate available of total expenditure is from the 1972 survey of industrial expenditure on research and development when industry reported expenditure of £27 million.

The Government contribution over the past six financial years was as follows: 1970–71, £3.88 million; 1971–72, £2.70 million; 1972–73, £10.95 million; 1973–74, £10.90 million; 1974–75, £11.08 million; and 1975–76, £9.27 million.
