§ Mrs. Joyce Butlerasked the Secretary of State for Social Services what guidance he intends giving to area health authorities in London regarding the level of health visitor staff establishment to be set in districts with high multiple occupation, high immigrant population and an ageing indigenous community; and, in particular, whether he intends to take any steps to encourage the appointment of visitors for the elderly where the desirable level of health visitor establishment seems unlikely to be attained in the short term.
§ Mr. DeakinsThe level of health visitor establishment and the deployment of health visiting staff is a matter for health authorities, having regard to local needs and priorities. Guidance issued in Circular 13/72 indicated that a ratio of one qualified health visitor to 4,600 population excluding the school health service, had been found reasonable in some areas while in other areas, including those with a high immigrant population, a ratio of 1:3000 might be desirable.
