HC Deb 14 June 1976 vol 913 c9W
40. Mr. Hugh Jenkins

asked the Minister for Overseas Development if he will review his policy of aid to Indonesia, having regard to the continued violation of human rights by the Government of that country.

Mr. Prentice

I fully share the concern of the House about violations of human rights, wherever they may occur. We take such violations into account when considering our aid programme. In the case of Indonesia, we have concluded that a sudden reduction of our aid on that account would increase the hardship of many poor people whom our aid is designed to help, but would not necessarily lead to any changes in governmental internal policies.
