HC Deb 14 June 1976 vol 913 c18W
Mr. Peter Morrison

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will pay an official visit to Chester before taking a final decision on the new telephone exchange.

Mr. Armstrong

The decision to recommend demolition was taken by my Department's engineers only after the most careful and detailed consideration of the results of the investigations carried out on the building, and of the possible alternative courses of action. The same conclusion was reached by the Post Office's independent professional advisers. In these circumstances I do not consider that any useful purpose would be served by my right hon. Friend's visiting Chester.
