HC Deb 09 June 1976 vol 912 c688W
Mr. Dykes

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what success rate has been achieved in the use of anti-rabies vaccines for humans in any recorded cases of rabies in England and Wales since 1st January 1975 to the present date.

Dr. Owen

In the two cases of human rabies in England and Wales recorded since January 1975 no anti-rabies vaccine had been given before the onset of symptoms and both cases were fatal.

During 1975 anti-rabies vaccine and/or antiserum was given to 116 persons who had a history of exposure to a potentially rabid animal abroad and to 10 persons with a history of exposure to the two fatal cases of human rabies mentioned above. None of these 126 persons developed the disease.
