§ Mr. Blakerasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is his estimate of the effect on tomato growers of the present glut on the market; and if he will take action to ensure the continuing viability of such growers.
§ Mr. StrangWe have no evidence of excessive supplies of tomatoes on the United Kingdom market. Wholesale prices have eased from the high levels ruling until the latter part of April; there appears to have been less seasonal increase in demand than is normal. Prices have recently been around the levels which obtained at the same time in 1975 and well above those in 1974. We shall continue to assist the industry to maintain its viability through capital grants, research and the advice of the Agricultural Development and Advisory Service.
