HC Deb 26 July 1976 vol 916 cc15-6W
Mrs. Chalker

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) how many staff hours are required to carry out the full routine at Walton Goal, Liverpool, with prisoners working five days each week and having their full educational and recreational programme;

(2) what restrictions are currently being experienced at Walton Gaol, Liverpool, as a result of the Government's ecnomic measures.

Mr. John

At Liverpool arrangements so far made to achieve economies in prison officer overtime involve a slight reduction in the prisoners' working week and curtailment of association and recreational activities. A temporary suspension of evening education has been partly offset by an increase in daytime classes. The arrangements are being kept under review. Staff hours required to run an establishment such as Liverpool fluctuate from a variety of causes, such as productions to court, which always affect the ability to maintain any particular regime.

Mrs. Chalker

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the gross maximum annual pay of a uniformed prison officer in Walton Gaol, Liverpool, at present.

Mr. John

Because there are so many variables in prison officers' pay each week it would be unrealistic to provide a current gross annual rate.

In pay week ended 22nd July 1976 the maximum gross pay paid to a prison officer, basic grade, employed on nonspecialist duties at Walton Gaol, Liverpool, was £140.09. This included overtime, shift disturbance allowance, weekend premium payments and pensionable value of quarters.

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the average annual pay of a uniformed prison officer at Walton, Gaol, Liverpool, at present.

Mr. John

Because there are so many variables in prison officers' pay each week it would be unrealistic to provide a current average annual pay rate.
