HC Deb 26 July 1976 vol 916 cc11-2W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the number of foreign students admitted to the United Kingdom for studies in the latest available period; and from which countries they come.

Dr. Summerskill

I refer my hon. Friend to Tables 1(a) and 1(b) of the Control of Immigration Statistics 1975, published on 16th June (Cmnd. 6504).

Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what checks are made on the ability of foreign students to support themselves once on courses in the United Kingdom.

Dr. Summerskill

Conditions are placed on the stay of a person who qualifies under the immigration rules for leave to enter or remain in the United Kingdom as a student. These conditions include a limit on the period for which he may remain. The period, which is normally 12 months or less, will not be extended without evidence that he has adequate funds available for his maintenance and that of any dependants.
