HC Deb 26 July 1976 vol 916 c29W
Mr. Corbett

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many cases of alleged fraud there have been in each of the last three years over the non-payment of income tax; how many cases have been settled by negotiation; how many cases have been taken to court and with what result; and what is the latest estimate of the annual total of unpaid income tax.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

I refer my hon. Friend to the reply I gave to my hon. Friend the Member for Chorley (Mr. Rodgers) on 10th May. — [Vol. 911, c.54.] Particulars of cases of under-assessment are given in Table 17 of the 118th Report of the Commissioners of Her Majesty's Inland Revenue (Cmnd. 6302). As regards the last part of the Question, I take it that my hon. Friend has in mind the income tax lost annually through evasion. No estimate of this can be made.
